The first ecological UNESCO conference was held in Novosibirsk

On June 19-20, 2017, the first international conference under the auspices of UNESCO "Ecologically safe technologies of environmental management and water use: theory and practice" was held at Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (Sibstrin). Representatives of the authorities of the Novosibirsk region, UNESCO Chairs of UNITWIN / UNESCO Programme, representatives of international organizations, professional communities, universities and research institutions from 7 countries of the world and 10 cities of Russia took part in the conference.

The international conference was timed to the Year of Ecology in Russia and the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the UNITWIN / UNESCO Chairs Programme. It  was held under the official patronage of the Russian Federation Commission for UNESCO. It should also be noted that it was included in one hundred major events of the Novosibirsk region in the framework of the Year of Ecology, selected by the Governor V.F. Gorodetsky. During his speech at the plenary session, the head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Novosibirsk region Yu.Yu. Marchenko noted that holding such a conference will seriously contribute to raising the level of environmental protection in the region.

Speakers of the plenary session of the conference were the rector of NSUACE (Sibstrin) Yu.L. Skoulubovich,  Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Novosibirsk region Yu.Yu. Marchenko, Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering of National University of Incheon (the Republic of Korea), President of the "Smart Water Supply System of the Republic of Korea" Society Gyewoon Choi, Head of the UNESCO Chair for Water Management of Belgrade University and the member of the Serbian National Commission for UNESCO Chair, Serbian National Committee for UNESCO IHP, Professor of Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering Department  Jovan Despotovich. Foreign experts shared their countries' experience in solving existing ecological problems: pollution of rivers, unsatisfactory quality of drinking water, urban waste treatment. Speakers expressed their confidence that for the consistent solution of environmental problems, ensuring environmental security and sustainable development of the region, preserving and improving health of the population, it is above all necessary for regions and countries to work in collaboration.

About 150 participants took part in the plenary session, including representatives of such field-oriented organizations as  the Unitary Enterprise of Novosibirsk "Gorvodokanal", GIS-Sibir LLC, Novosibirsk Scientific Research Institute of Hygiene, Belgrade University (Serbia), Ulan-Bator Vodokanal ( Mongolia), Municipal LLC "VILO RUS", Siberian Research Center" Planeta ", Shushi University of Technology (Armenia) and others.

The two-day international conference was held in four sections. Experts discussed the role of UNESCO Chairs in solving environmental problems, environmental problems of water basins, environmentally friendly technologies of water supply and sewerage systems, geoinformation technologies in solving environmental problems. In whole 34 reports were presented during the work of the sections.

The conference ended with the delivery of certificates to the participants. Thanksgiving letters were handed over to the sponsors of the event - the director of the Municipal Unitary Enterprise of Novosibirsk "Gorvodokanal" Yu.N. Pohil, the head of LLC "VILO RUS" in Novosibirsk  KA. Plavinsky, General Director of GIS-Sibir LLC, D.A. Stativa.

Summing up the results of the fruitful work of the first international UNESCO conference in Novosibirsk, the rector of the NSACE (Sibstrin), Head of the UNESCO Chair " The Theory and Technology of Environmental Safety in Water Resources Control " Yu.L. Skolubovich said that a preliminary agreement was reached on the establishment of branches of the International Chair of the university in Kemerovo (Russia), Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. In addition, research work in close cooperation with the UNESCO Chair of  Belgrade University (Serbia) is planned. These preliminary agreements will make it possible to attract not only scientists but also university students to major international projects. "We are creating a new network of interaction within the international community on environmental issues. This is an important step not only for our university and region, but for the country as a whole”, the rector of Sibstrin said.

It is planned that international ecological conferences on the basis of the UNESCO Chair of Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (Sibstrin) will be held every two years.
